Interestingly, while the major accounting firms appear to be right sizing their headcount, industry players are keeping a watchful eye out for chartered accountants. This need is for both full time permanent employees as well as contract accountants who can help out on specific assignments.

It would be inaccurate in most cases to say that any specific employer is simply not hiring anyone. Although there may be no general need for hiring it would appear that the demand for Chartered Accountants is still quite good. In fact the appetite for recently qualified PCA is really quite strong.

One of the hot button, higher demand specialties at the moment is for internal auditors. Recent corporate scandals and the requirements of Singapore, which applies, to public companies create the demand. Corporations are keenly aware of the need for effective internal controls and the need to invest in internal auditors.

Other higher demand areas include chartered accountants with expertise in financial reporting; those with experience as controllers, and accountants with strong systems implementation skills. Corporations want high quality people who they can count on to produce complete and accurate financial information that can be relied upon without question.

Many corporate employers are still quite interested in finding people with specific industry experience. For instance real estate companies definitely prefer professionals who have worked with real estate companies previously and this can include experience gained as an external auditor.

Obviously it is always best for a candidate to customize their resume to highlight why their particular profile is so perfectly suited for a particular employer.

Personality, presence, leadership, and self-starter are often cited as being the differentiating factors between candidates on the short list. Square pegs in round holes just don't work.

Obviously top employers are very interested in attracting top CA talent even in these times when general employment recruiting is softer. Candidates must be prepared to demonstrate that they can add value, grow with the organization, and really want to be part of the team.

Competitive compensation packages would normally include base salaries and bonus based on either or both personal performance and the profitability of the organization.

Chartered Accountants are also taking on non-traditional career paths that involve taking on contract accounting assignments with top employers.
